Hydrangeas and Spiritual Symbolism

Flowers can connect us spiritually to nature. It can assist with creating a sacred spiritual space, while making an oasis of calm both inside and out. It being summer, I can’t get enough of Hydrangeas. With so many varieties and colors to choose from, there’s no reason this low maintenance flower shouldn’t be part of your outdoor decor. And, they make great cut flowers, so you can spruce up your indoors too. But did you know that Hydrangeas have a spiritual connection too?

Symbolism

Hydrangeas have had an influence on different cultures throughout time. But specifically, they have been linked to hope, prosperity, growth, longevity, and wisdom.

The Victorian Era

Hydrangeas were a symbol of pride and vanity. The flowers were also used as a means of communication. Depending on the color and bloom type chosen, each conveyed a complex message; one of gratitude, apology, sincerity, or vanity.

Native Americans

Although hydrangeas are non-native plants, Native Americans often used them for medicinal, spiritual, symbolic, and ceremonial purposes. Hydrangeas were viewed as part of the larger ecosystem and therefore, need they to be respected and protected.

Hydrangeas and the heart

The full, round shape of this flower can represent emotions. They can range from deep feelings of love and affection to regret and apology.

Color representation

With so many color varieties, each hydrangea color could have a different representation. Blue is often associated with peace, serenity, and forgiveness. Pink represents love, romance, and heart felt emotion. White is viewed as purity, grace, and spiritual alignment. And purple is linked to intuition and spiritual awareness.

Whichever bloom variety or color you choose, it will be hard not falling in love with this natural beauty.
