Setting Up an Indoor Garden Using a Wall Planter is Easy
Are you looking for a potted house plant alternative? This simple indoor garden will make for a lovey display. If you have everything you need ready to go, this project will take about 30 minutes to complete. Setup is easy, but with the soil, it can get messy. So you may want to put this together outside. Aside from picking up plants and a small bag of soil, everything you need comes with your kit. Follow these simple suggestions, and you will have a beautiful, authentic indoor garden in no time.
What You Need To Get Started
Decide where you are going to work, and have the following items on hand:
- soil (choose soil that is appropriate for the plants you are using)
- small plants or succulents – guesstimate what you’ll need based on the size wall planter you choose and the size/variety of the plants
- a small container of water
Choosing Your Plants
This kit from Nature Hill’s does not come with the plants. I chose to use succulents, as they were recommended on the package, but you don’t have to. Simply head down to your local nursery and pick up plants of your choosing. For this demonstration I went to the Home Depot and Lowes where I picked out succulents in different sizes and varieties. These plants generally are the same color, so by choosing different varieties, I could have varying textures in my display.
On a side note, I got a better price, and better quality plants from the Home Depot. They also had more options to choose from. Lowes had a smaller selection but I liked that I could get larger plants. Depending on the size planter you are working with will determine how many plants you need. For the 8×10 display, I used 14 plants of varying sizes. The sizes ranged from mini to large sized succulents.
What to Consider Before Starting
You have 3 options for how to display your Instant Wall Planter. You’ll be saving yourself a mess, by deciding this before your start.
- Wall Display: if you choose to put this planter up on a wall, it is recommended that you use anchors to hold the frame, these were not included in the box.
- Easel Display: if you choose to display this frame like an easel or upright picture frame, simply screw in the accompanying easel stand (this comes with the kit) into the back of the planter before you start adding your soil and plants.
- Lay it flat: there is no prep work here, its as simple as it sounds. I went with this option.
Putting it Together
To get started lay out everything from the box. You should have:
- a bunch of pins in 2 different sizes
- the framed planter
- easel stand and screws
- instructions
Also lay out, your plants, soil, and water.
Simple Instructions
- Put some soil on the bottom of the planter
- Arrange your plants – you will want to take them out of the cups they came in and place them in the planter
- Add more soil
- Water a bit
- Insert the pins; simply put through the holes on the side of the planter. Since the planter is a rectangle shape, put the longer pins through the longer sides, and the shorter pins through the shorter sides, making sure the pins go through the plants.
- Clean up and enjoy your creation

A Great Gift
This would make a unique gift for a plant lover or creative person. It’s a thoughtful, fun gift that can be enjoyed for a long time. Simply purchase the plants, soil, kit, and put it in a nice gift bag or large box.
